The System Works

The System Works is a cinematic civic education experience that explores the architecture of American democracy through the lens of systems thinking. Blending original music, film, storytelling, political science, and historical analysis, it examines how institutions, incentives, and power interact to shape the outcomes we experience every day.
At its core is a deceptively simple question: What if the problems we keep trying to fix are not simply accidents or failures, but predictable outcomes of the way the system is organized?
Rather than asking audiences who is right or wrong, The System Works asks a different set of questions: Who writes the rules? What incentives do those rules create? Who gains access to power? How do media, money, and institutions reinforce one another? And what happens when those forces become self-sustaining?
Across topics including political communication, propaganda, campaign finance, lobbying, polarization, gerrymandering, regulation, taxation, civic participation, and democratic reform, the presentation provides audiences with practical frameworks for understanding how political systems function beyond the headlines. Its emphasis is not on partisan advocacy, but on civic literacy, equipping people with the analytical tools to recognize patterns, evaluate evidence, and better understand the forces shaping public life.
Designed for colleges and universities, leadership programs, civic organizations, conferences, libraries, community groups, and public audiences, The System Works combines the accessibility of a live performance with the rigor of political science scholarship. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of how systems operate, why institutions produce the outcomes they do, and where citizens retain the capacity to influence what comes next.
